Unique and beautiful film

This film made a big impression on me. When he was a teenager, Mohsen Makhmalbaf stabbed a police officer. The officer survived while - avoiding the death penalty because he was a minor - Makhmalbaf served a jail term. Twenty years later Makhmalbaf is a renowned filmmaker, the former officer looks him up and together they decide to make a film about that pivotal event in their lives. They recruit youngsters to play their own younger selves, and the film looks at their efforts to recreate the moment of the stabbing.

Funny, sweet and strange, this semi-autobiographical film is riveting throughout. And it all builds to a freeze-frame ending that is as beautiful as any I have ever seen. Very highly recommended.
