I've never really understood the opening scene of Norma jean naked at the church - did this actully happen? Unlikely in clean-cut 40's middle America. or was it symbolic of something? Please explain.

She was telling of a dream that she had of being naked in front of God/Church - not sure if the real MM ever said this though...

This scene was probably made strictly for the effect on audiences and/or meant as some sort of symbolism.
