Disney Channel Original Movie....

Interesting, I just saw a commercial (from 1998) that referred to this as a DCOM. I had no clue that they ever recognized it as such. I wonder why they abandoned it?

Rest in Peace Jim Kelly, you will be missed.

They probably think it's too heavy in comparison to the newer DCOMs. I haven't seen it on Disney since 2002 during Black History Month and it was late at night. I happened to catch the last bit of The Color of Friendship a few months ago and it also came on late at night.

You're probably right. I don't even recall them airing it back around the time The Color of Friendship came out, though slavery and discrimination are two different levels of injustice obviously. Color of friendship was heavily shown at the time and is still talked about to this day, I believe they air it at normal hours during Black History Month, but I could be wrong.

I think it was a mistake to "bury" this film as it's a gem and surprisingly true to life and effective in my opinion. I watched it again in 2013 (?) as an adult (having not seen it since I was a child) with a few other adults and we all enjoyed it.

For some reason I was thinking it was one of those tv movies like Once Upon A Time When we Were Colored or The Ernest Green Story (a better comparison considering the Disney affiliation) because I thought I'd seen it on regular television. That is still possible seeing as this was aired in '96 and my family DID NOT have cable then. Disney probably didn't have those strict rules about their DCOMs at the time. OR perhaps I ONLY saw it at school, around the time it was released on VHS and a few years later after my memory fogged a bit.

SN: Disney airs their older DCOMS at like 2:30 am on weekend nights, it used to be later like 3 or 3:30am.

I know what you mean. I remember seeing The Ernest Green Story a few years after it originally aired, but it was on another network. I was surprised when I found out that Disney had made it, because I thought the topic was too mature (I'd forgotten about Nightjohn and its serious subject matter for some reason).

I wish they'd air them earlier and more often. Not only would it be nostalgic for us older fans, but the kids of today could watch and enjoy them too. Both serious and light-hearted DCOMS.

Oh, I did the same with the Ernest Green story. I looked it up on IMDb after seeing it on, maybe Centric a few years ago during Black History Month. I'm guessing they aired it on ABC as well which is how I saw it in the first place. I also thought it was surprisingly truthful and a bit risque for a Disney film. That's when I first started realizing Disney (Channel) started out pretty realistic and it just got soft over the years.

Right! I hate to be that person but perhaps they're afraid to air them side-by-side with what's on these days. I think they would say they fear that modern kids wouldn't be able to relate, but in reality they are just aware how ridiculous MOST of those new DCOMS are.

We should have known what was going on when they got rid of Vault Disney.

I think so too. It's a shame though.

Girl, you're taking me even further back with Vault Disney. Memories....

It really is a shame.

My goodness, I miss Vault Disney. My mom couldn't really relate to the other stuff I watched on Disney/Nickelodeon but we would actually watch Vault Disney together.
