Walter Mattheau

I love this movie- but I think it would have been very interesting to see it as a Mattheau/Lemmon film, like was considered. Does anyone agree?

Mattheau as president. Would definetely have been interesting!

Garner was good, though!

well, actally Matthau was very good at dramatic roles, just as good as in comedy i think. Ofcourse i would have preefered to see Matthau in the James Garner role (im not dissin Garner), but we really shouldn't complain, since Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau did quite many movies togheter. I think it totally adds up to 10 or something. (including "Kotch" and "Grass Hopper".)

i feel so lost and alone, since you dissappeared from my life,
noone to share the moments, and changes in the time,
i miss your warm ways,
your inviting smile, and your eyes gaze,
i got noone to talk to, when the dark night come,
i try to pretend, but its for you i long,
i've had my mona lisa removed from the wall,
and noone else can sooth and satisfy my soul,
there is an empty atmosphere, there's something that lacks,
my heart has fell at your feet, and i want to have it back.

Actually Walter Matthau was supposed to have played alongside Jack Lemmon but health reasons kept him from acting.

Yeah but I don't think Mattau could have done as well as Garner in that role

NOW

Switch the roles and put Matthau in the Lemon role and Lemon in the Garner role, and you would have had something.

I'd rather go hunting with Dick Cheney, than driving with Ted Kennedy

I think Matthau is great, but Garner is perfect in this movie. It wouldn't have been as good without him.

I like james garner in this movie

I'm glad it was Garner and not Matthau.
I like Matthau, and he and Lemmon obviously had a wonderful chemistry. But it's been done, repeatedly. And I think throwing a different actor -- Garner -- into the mix created a fresh, new dynamic that we'd never seen before.

I always wondered if Matthau was earmarked for the role but Garner brought a different dimension.

Its that man again!!

plus if Matthau had remained in I think this would have felt more like a stepchild of Grumpy Old Men instead of its own stand alone picture. How many people remember the one they did on the boat. Same happened with the later films of Wilder and Pryor.
