Fans of Vonnegut literature

I am a fan of Vonnegut's literature and I would like to ask the rest of fans, whether they did or didn't like this movie.

I had mixed feelings. The movie seemed incomplete for me. And it was very scenic and unreal, I had a feeling, that I was watching a dream, rather than reality.

(I have read 10 of his books in the past year, the worst for me were Galapagos and Cat's Cradle, the best book was Sirens of Titan)

I just watched this the other day in fact (ironically I'm watching "Breakfast of Champions" as I write this.). Personally between this, "Slaughterhouse-Five" and what I've seen of "B.o.C" I honestly believe that "Mother Night" was probably the most faithful of adaptations that I've seen, it was not a great adaptation (It's nearly impossible for Vonnegut Novels). In all honesty while many praise it I thought that the film version of Slaughterhouse-Five was downright awful (Which is tough saying considering I Love the book and the other works of director George Roy Hill. I was actually impressed with Mother Night considering prior all I had seen was Slaughterhouse-Five.

Was Mother Night good yes, but in my opinion, it came closer to hitting the nail on the head than any of his other adaptations.

I agree, I think that Nick Nolte made such a good performance and because of him film is enjoyable.

Me too. In terms of the 'vibe' of a Kurt Vonnegut book, I think Mother Night best captures it. It's that thread of alienation that runs through his work that was so effectively captured. Also, I'm not generally a Nolte fan, but he nailed this.

I'm a huge fan of Vonnegut, and read this book a long, long time ago. I have not read it recently so I only have the highlights of the book in memory. After seeing this movie I would say that the adaptation is somewhat faithful, with a few very notable, but forgivable exceptions.

However, the book was a real page turner for me, whereas this movie was rather slow.

There is no flavor text!

I just finished reading Cat's Cradle, and when I say just I mean 20 minutes ago.
I did enjoy it, but not as much as S. of T.. For me Slaughterhouse 5 is the one.
It embodies all of Vonnegut's humanity and humour. He really knew a thing or
two about the human condition. Have yet to view or indeed read Mother Night.

I tried watching Slaughterhouse Five, but couldn' t make it all the way through. I worry with Mother Night, by the looks of the trailer, that the comedy would be completely stripped out. Is that so?

reply

I can't believe that any deep reader of Vonnegut would object to a film adaptation of one of his novels on the basis of it being "unreal." They're all dreams. That's the point.

I have been a fan of Vonnegut's work for many years, but Mother Noght had never really grabbed me until I watched the movie. I had always preferred the more outlandish, fantastical works like Sirens of Titan, Slapstick, Galapagos and such.

This movie made me reappraise Mother Night, though, as a post-modern tale of genius - we are what we pretend to be, whether that's a nazi propagandist or a man without any drives or beliefs. Right up until the end Howard Campbell writes his own story. I think I will need to re-read the novel now.

I also like hearing Arvo Part - entirely suitable choice; music with quotation makes around it.

And what a pleasure to see Kurt himself towards the end - I don't think they could have found anyone with a sadder face.

I thought that this was by far the best adaptation of Vonnegut to film that I've seen. It's surreal qualities were intentional, and in keeping with the novel's style. I consider it superior to the film version of Slaughterhouse Five, to say nothing of the mostly terrible adaptation of Breakfast of Champions.

I would rank Mother Night and Slaughterhouse Five the highest among the Vonnegut books I've read. Most of his later books (from Breakfast of Champions on) have their moments of hilarity in brilliance, but they're few and far between.

I LOVED the book. It's one of my favorite Vonnegut books. The story had such potential to be a great movie in the right hands.

This movie was not in the right hands.
