Good film but the plot?

Can someone explain where the plot to this came from? I've read the book and seen both this film and the Alex Kingston version and I have no idea where they got this plot from. I don't remember anything like this being in the book at all.

The eyes are open, the mouth moves, but Mr. Brain has long since departed, hasn't he, Perce?

I think they made this one up w/ stuff pulled from nowhere and just called it Moll Flanders so those who have read it will see the movie. I haven't seen it so I'm not saying it's bad, just completely different from the book.

I did enjoy the movie, but it's true that very little of it came from the book. However, SO much happened in the book that I think it would be difficult to put it on film, unless somebody wanted to tackle it as a mini series. Nevertheless, the acting is very good, and I'm sad that the girl that played Flora didn't keep making movies afterward.

Yes I agree - there is a mini-series http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116345/ which is worth finding... completely different plot to this movie which is condensed somewhat. And it was made by the Brits with Alex Kingston as Moll and Daniel Craig. I guess it would have been difficult to just pick a couple of things which happened from the book without losing the impact. Her 'degredation' was much more gradual in the book (and the mini series) and she has more relationships! It has better character development and much more is made of her ambitions to be wealthy. Interestingly they were made at around the same time.

reply

Yeah... this appears to disregard even the basic skeleton of the book plot entirely. Oh well.

What tickles me about the storyline of this movie is when Moll tells the woman who wants to sell her virginity "I was raised in the catholic church" & the woman says "so was the virgin Mary"! Where did she go to church, wasn't Mary raised as a Jew?!!!

reply

It has nothing to do with the book!
But is a nice film!

I really enjoyed it so many movies today are about machines and robots that to see characters that move me is enjoyable. I started watching it because of the title although it really wasn't "Moll Flanders" it was enjoyable.

"Pack up all my Cares and Woes"
Bye Bye Blackbird
