Still the best MI movie of the series

Ghost protocol and MI3 were good, but this was so stylish. It is a pity its not rated higher.

Yes, I think it's the best one too. MI3 and Ghost Protocol are very good, but they're not nearly as interesting (and stylish) as the first one.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

regardless of whether you think MI1 is the best of the series or not it does have a different feel/tone to it vs the rest of the series as those feel a bit more action oriented etc.

personally i rank the series like this...

1.Mission Impossible (1996) - 7.5-8/10
-.Mission Impossible III (2006)
3.Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011) - 7/10
4.Mission Impossible II (2000) - 5/10 (Thumbs Down) (i used to think this was easily the best of the series years ago but took a solid hit on April 14th 2012.)

i got the 1st/3rd pretty much tied as i think the first has it's own feel/tone to it and the 3rd one has a bit more emotional punch to it. it's pretty close either way for me between the two overall but i think the first one is better filmed though without that shaky cam stuff that the 3rd one has.

p.s. i just re-watched MI1/MI3 very recently and MI4 i last re-watched in May 2014(made for my 3rd viewing total of MI4), so my ratings are accurate.

Yes, there is a sense of cloak-and-dagger in this movie, almost like a cold-war thriller. Every sequel is more of a straight-up action movie.

The series took a giant tonal shift after this one. You basically can pretend like this film exists in a different series. I wouldn't even compare it with the others.

reply

Best bad guy, best film. Hunt's Missions felt truly impossible. You cared about the death's belonging to the team. That made the film very stronger than the rest of the flicks.

reply

Yep, it's still my favorite in the series too. Really underrated storytelling/screenwriting, IMO.

reply

Not only that but the first film holds up really well after 20 years. In response to some of the comments, agree that this one feels much more like a spy film than the others.

reply

A darker film. The puzzles and flashbacks adds a different feel.

The stealth scenes in this film, are often satirized on Tv shows, so yes MI1 is still king of them all. The drop down cable scene is forever known.

reply

I think this and MI 5 Rogue Nation are the best.

reply

Well it's the first one and its to understand how Ethan exists.

Plus how the whole IMF team and what happens to them.

The rotten tomatoes rating is too low, this was what the third highest grossing movie of 96?

Y'know, I could eat a peach for hours
