What actually happened during Kris Kristofferson's set

Kris Kristofferson played his set on August 26, 1970, the first day of the festival. Quite often, on the first day of these huge festivals, the bugs were still being worked out with the sound system. Kris Kristofferson' set was plagued by poor amplification. Consequently, there were shouts from the audience to have the volume turned up.

Additionally, the gate crashing was in full force while he was playing. The result was chaos, and the crowd started to get loud. By the end of the set ("Me & Bobby McGee") the crowd was so loud that the set had to be brought to an end. It seemed like the audience was booing and jeering. Kris leaves the stage in a hurry, followed by his bandmates. Rikki Farr gets onstage and starts to scream at the audience.

Later on in the day, Rikki read an apology note from the audience; that they were not booing or jeering. A call was sent out to have Kris Kristofferson back for another set. So Kris Kristofferson was welcomed back for another set on August 30th which, according to MELODY MAKER, went down much better, and nurtured a peaceful and successful environment for the rest of the festival.
