Rules about infants left in cars unattended.

We know it's against the law now.

But was it illegal during the time period of this movie?
If so, the parents should've been in hot water for leaving baby Matilda not only alone in the car, but in the rear back when her car seat was spinning and moving around.

reply

It's obvious the parents didn't care, showing us this was to show that Matilda's parents really didn't care about her well being.

reply

I've always thought about how LONG they left her there until they came back to give the poor thing a feed!!

reply

Orrrrrr how often they bothered to give her a bottle, change her diaper and give her medical care.

Can't imagine what would happen to her if she wasn't a gifted child who was capable of raising herself at the tender age of 4.

reply

I think they did a lot of things that were neglectful/borderline illegal/illegal...

reply

Not sure. I was born in '65 and it was very common for people my age to sit in the back of station wagons. There were no car seats in the back and we would be sliding all over the place.

reply

When I was a kid in the '60s we often rode in the backs of station wagons and the beds of pickup trucks. There were no seat belts in those cars. We had a great time and grew up to be productive members of society without criminal records.

If I just had to run into a store for just a couple of minutes I would have no problem leaving a kid, even a baby, in the car if it wasn't hot or freezing. There is absolutely no harm in it.

reply

It depended on the state at that time.

reply

Terrible answer. How about going a lil more in depth, seeing as how the movie takes place in California and not in an unspecified state?

reply

Nope, no need to go in depth. You're online, and nothing is stopping you from looking it up.

reply

Terrible response too. If you are replying to a question online and give a shit answer, you're a degen

While that was bad, it's definitely not the worst thing to happen in this movie. Her father erases the device on the car that keeps track of miles and then sells a used car as a new car for the price of a new car. Trunchable abuses kids and also puts them into a device that would kill them and also forces a kid to eat so much cake he would get sick and die. Of course it's also implied that Trunchable killed Miss Honey's father. So many horrible illegal things happen in this movie. I still like this movie, mind you.

You’re right — the parents should have been in trouble. But that was the point. The movie conveyed the message that Matilda’s parents did not treat her well. It made the ending more sensible, when she stays with Ms Honey.
