One thing that really bugs me about this film...

...is that Danny De Vito does the narration. It's a great film, but why play the dad and then do the voiceover too? It totally takes you out of the film when there is narration as it is not narration from the perspective of the character he plays.

I was never one to hold grudges. My father held grudges, I'll always hate him for that

reply

I don't see how his narration affects the viewing of the film. His voice was recognizable but I didn't think any thing of it.

reply

I think it was done to lighten up the film's dark undertone. One of the villains narrating the film make it less sinister.

reply

Maybe, but was he narrating as the character he plays, or as Danny De Vito just doing a voiceover? It's the fact that one can't definitively answer that question that makes the necessity of his narration questionable.

How difficult would it have been to just get somebody else in to narrate it...?

reply

Tbh, as a child, I had no idea he did the narration.

Took me 10 years to realize it lol.

reply

Its obvious. He was narrating as a narrator only, not as Matilda's father.
If that were the case, he wouldn't be speaking about Mr Wormwood in the third person.

Obviously, but he's still Danny De Vito narrating a film in which he plays one of the main characters. It's annoying, I agree with the OP.

reply

He did direct the movie too, so maybe it was just a way to get it done. ("Im making the movie, i might as well narrate too"?)

reply

Oh, whatever.

reply

Yeah thats one of the things I never liked about it. It was probably his ego. He could have gotten another actor.

Lose the Game!!!!!!!

reply

I personally enjoyed his narration.

The narration was kind, and soft, unlike the Mr Wormwood character.

I am probably alone in this theory, but I think of the entire movie being retold after the end, with Mr. Wormwood being less judgmental the second time around, and realizing how incredible Matilda was.

I know it is a reach, but it makes sense to me.

reply

That is not a bad way to look at it.

reply

Danny Devito also directed it.
Budget cuts from the director I guess :)

reply

For the longest time, I honestly didn't know Danny Devito was the Nerrator. I had to look it up
