The little girl in the alley???? And P.S. to follow w/ different topic.

Like the movie, but there's one thing I didn't get. What was that situation with the little girl in the alley? I see that he stopped her and kicked her but why was she out there running around in her nightgown in the middle of the night and why did he start beating her? Thanx for the help anybody!!!

P.S. just a thought that doesn't have to do with the top, does anyone else think Julia Roberts was a bad casting idea? Love her and all but I thought she was wrong for the part and looked to old for an 18 year old. Thoughts??

Not sure exactly why she was running so quickly, but on second look I think she was running from Hyde.
Even if she wasn't, Hyde was near-pure evil & enjoyed inflicting pain and torment. That's why he kicked her so viciously.
Judging from the way the mom held her screeching, bloody daughter yet had no concern for her (she just wanted the check) the little girl was likely just a neglected child running around at night.

Was she supposed to be 18? I thought she was supposed to be in her very early 20s. But then, she did look a little too old even for that. But I admit I liked Roberts in the role, she let in a vulnerability that was surprising in its believability. I truly forgot she was acting in several scenes.
It was soooo refreshing to see her 'plain herself up', freed from that ridiculous toothy-grin & extensions-ridden mane of hair she normally sports. Like Farrah in "The Burning Bed", Julia proved she could actually ACT here.

The "only 18" bit seems like a mistake in the trivia. Nowhere in the film does Mrs. Farraday say that Mary is only 18, she simply says that Mary isn't even an apprentice. It has been ages since I've read the book, but I don't think she was supposed to be 18, perhaps early 20s.

I believe that is something that happens in the original Jekyll novel.
