Does anyone know why Glenn Close's madam character was so very white? Is that what a whorehouse madam would have worn in that time to let others know she was a madam? Help please???
shareYou are correct. Back then being tanned was a very bad sign if you were a woman. It meant you worked outdoors and your man didn't take care of you. Women would stretch their paleness by adding the kabooki like makeup because it made you desirable. And then when you added like the bright red lips and all that rouge then that meant you were a whore.
