Might the message be obscured?

Because it is a small scene near the end, it makes me wonder if most make the connection. (Obviously spoilers follow.)

Near the end when Bessie is talking to Lee and being resigned to die because she can't find a suitable marrow donor, she tells her sister she has no regrets because there has been "so much love in her life."

But Lee misunderstood, she thought Bessie was referring to all those who loved her. She corrected Lee, she meant all the people in her life that she was able to love. Until that point Lee (Streep) never had made that connection about life, that real love is what you are able to give to someone else, and that is why she was a marginal mother and had such difficulty connecting with her son, Hank (DiCaprio). It was that revelation that might make Lee understand and get on a better track to deal positively with relationships.

To me that is what the whole movie is about, being able to give rather than always looking to what you might be able to get.

That is precisely what the summary message is for this film . . .
