the film is a little sappy but Streep and Keaton elevate it
It makes me so sad to see this attitude out there, because the play this movie is based on is anything but sappy, it is dark and funny and rather discomforting. For instance, in the play, the son's apology for burning down the house isn't a maudlin and sentimental moment as it is in the movie, it is a
huge laugh, because it's the first time we learn that's what he did.
Instead, this director did a really dreadful job with the material. Either he didn't get the tone, or consciously chose to change the tone.
Keaton couldn't bring a sharper edge to it all by herself, and as much as I admire her, I would never have cast Streep. It needed Teri Garr.
In any case, I'd never see this as a case of actors saving the day. You practically have to scrape away what everybody is doing just to grasp how good the writing is.
"You must sing him your prettiest songs, then perhaps he will want to marry you."
