What age group were the 60's cards targeted at?

I always assumed it was a young 8-10 years old, seeing as that's the age alot of kids are into trading cards and such. But looking through some of them on the internet, godamn, there's some pretty graphic stuff for 8 year olds  And I'm all for "Kids in the 60's/70's/80's/90's/00's were different then kids of today" (funny how that happens, huh?) but man, some of those cards are freaking DARK!

I know.

The imagery in those cards would be appropriate for an R - rated movie.

I can understand why parents back then were in such an uproar.

I'm a bit surprised to find out that the cards were made in the Silver Age of Comics.

They managed to get it by censors for a while.

When I was a kid back in the early 70s I had the complete set of cards. My mom really hated them but my dad thought they were cool and bought them for me. They actually got me interested in horror and sci-fi and led me to also collect magazines like Famous Monsters, Starlog and Fangoria. Unfortunately my cards are long gone but I'm glad they have been reprinted for a whole new generation to enjoy!

If you were caught with "Mars Attacks" or the equally grim Civil War cards at school (this was in the early 60s when I would have been about 9 or 10) you were in massive trouble and the cards were instantly confiscated.
They caused so much concern that eventually they were banned by the UK authorities.
