General Decker was the ONLY one who understood the Martians!!

This may be the ONLY good right-wing satirical movie ever!!

Meaning a movie that shows left wing guys as bumbling idiots (scientist jackass, media idiots, kiss-up Oreo general, hippies, you name it) and the right wing guys as the only guys with their $h!t wired tight.

Case in point: general Decker.

He's the ONLY one who gets the martians right from the jump. They don't come to socialize, they come to attack!

He says so right at the beginning.

Sure he ends up squashed, but only because he's simply overpowered. At least he didn't die begging like Jack Black.

I really liked him. Roy Steiger should have been nominated for that role.

The the only "good right wing movie" is a over-the-top comedy?
yeah i see what you did there.....

Applied Science? All science is applied. Eventually.

Got that right.

What over the top comedy? Watch Fox News...

POLITICS!!!

Isn't it interesting how in hindsight Fox news is so much more often correct than CNN. Time has a funny way of exposing ignorance.

Well. I think you missed the point. He didn't understand them. He just wanted to destroy them because he is as brutal and sadistic as they are.

He didn't understand the martians. He feared them. That fear lead to anger. That anger lead to hate. That hate well you know.

reply

I say he understood them completely. He thought that they were here only to destroy us and he was right.

reply

I don't think this was a right-wing movie. It lampooned everyone, including the militaristic general who was adamant about implementing a nuclear war.

Speaking as a liberal however I like that this film was even-handed and didn't simply present the conservatives as complete idiots and the liberals as the heroes. During its release, the mid-90s, that POV was actually quite subversive, in the same way a blatantly liberal mainstream movie would have been during the Reagan years or in the first few post-9/11 years.

reply

but they made him very likable and made the others seem clueless

reply

Yeah. What a likeable character he was. Fersure.

reply

They didn't come here just to attack. They came in peace at first, it was the birds that made them attack for some reason never explained. Ergo, he was in fact wrong and warmongering. The movie was making fun of everyone, not one side.

reply

it was the birds that made them attack
No it wasn't! Even the First Daughter noticed that and then said so explicitly--remember...? ??? Ahhh, you should watch movies before trying to explain them hehehehehehe

reply

al666940-3, he didn't "understand" them. He just happened to be right about them. There's a difference.

Even if the Martians had in fact been a friendly, peace loving race, he'd still have been saying exactly the same thing.

reply

The movie kind of reminds me what's happening with us and the Muslims right now. They say they are peaceful but behave the opposite. It's really prophetic actually. Was Time Burton warning us of things to come?

reply

I don't know if he was warning us but yes, we have those naive souls who still cling to the whole "religion of peace" nonsense. Peace as they see it is our being submissive to their sharia law.

reply

Muslims have fanatics who want to kill and drive airplanes into buildings. Christians also have fanatics who want to blow up abortion clinics. I wonder if Buddhist or Hindus have fanatic violent followers. If they do you never hear about them.

reply

The number of abortion bombings by Christians are slim to next to none. Muslim terrorists are worldwide, in this country, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

reply

This is such a false argument. You have had one lone attacker against an abortion clinic in what, 10 years?. Maybe two attackers?. How many dead people?.

Meanwhile, you have organized attacks by Muslim groups like... twice a week?. How many people are killed yearly?. I mean, COME ON, the difference is staggering, and some (many)peolpe (read: most left wing people) try to make both things the same?.

There's even an Islamist group taking over a country ffs.

The levels of fanaticism, intolerance and violence in Islam are far, FAR more tan in any other religion. That's simply a fact, whoever might like it or not like it.

BTW, yeah, it's interesting to see this movie with that in mind.

reply

I'm not going to deny that radical Islam terrorist are killing people all the time. Let's just not deny that Christian terrorist also exist. If you don't believe me talk to some people in Oklahoma City. Yes, I know that McVey was not really a Christian. I submit that the people that crashed jets into buildings were not true Muslims. Both groups are demented killers.

reply

Actually they really were true Muslims. You must not have ever read the Koran. They do these things because the Koran tells them to. There are many violent verses in there. Quaran 4:74 "Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fighteth in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow a vast reward." In contrast, the most controversial things Jesus said seemed TOO peaceful such as "If someone slaps you, turn the other cheek to them also" ~~ Matt 5:39
