great cast wasted in an unfunny sci fi comedy

This is on the comedy channel at the moment. I can see why this bombed when it came out despite having a great cast the whole film just doesn't work. The humour feels forced, I felt like I was being plodded to laugh at every stupid little scene. I think a good example of a Sci fi comedy that works is men in black. Perhaps if Barry Sonnefield had directed it could have been better.

The Martians are the star of this show. While these animated ghouls look chillingly realistic, the movie is ironically sunk by too many cartoony humans, chiefly Jim Brown in his stupid Pharaoh costume and Jack Nicholson as not one but two idiotic characters. But I liked Natalie Portman, Martin Short and especially Lisa Marie as a gliding, mysterious sexpot. Way, way too much juvenile humor here...it's a terrible pity, because this could have been fantastic. Awesome special effects!

The best part of the film was opening credits.
I kept saying "Wow, Jack Nicholson! That's a good sign there. Wow, Brosnan?? He's at his career high with Bond right? Michael J. Fox? I love that guy! They even got Jack Black?!"
It was all downhill from there.

Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down and a Wagging Finger of Shame

Pretty much my experience too. Wow what a great cast, only to be wasted on trite mediocrity.

I thought it was hilarious.

indeed

so many movies, so little time

Tim Burton was the wrong choice. Barry Sonnefield would had been good or someone else like Joe Dante.

I agree. This never really needed to be a comedy at all... at least not in the broad and annoying way that it is. The original cards tel a straightforward story of alien invasion with the Martians being notably sadistic and the level of gore being very high. The sheer excess might have led to some form of black comedy but I imagine something more along the lines of Independence Day with graphic violence - Get those alien boots on the ground (the ones we saw lining up when our heroes flew in and blew up the mother ship) and commence the slaughter.

Who cares if the humor is really lame? Its very interesting to watch and *Spoiler Alert* The aliens were defeated by the power of Slim Whitman so i mean that automatically makes it way cooler than your favorite movie.
