Why wouldn't the cops (he took back to the town) go to the cemetary and check out the tombstones like Jason asked them to?

Because by this time they thought he was a nutcase so they didn't believe anything he said after that. i don't understand thought why he didnt answer the question and say that no that is not the man I killed. It was another man.
