This movie sucks..

Everything about this movie sucks.. I mean the heroine wakes up from the dead and does all that *beep* impossible things. I wouldn't be surprised if she walked on water and turned *beep* into gold.

And the script was so lame, I mean when she kills the guy that screams while he is falling down

"Die you screaming motherFuc..." ...wait what?

Harlin's best movie, along with DEEP BLUE SEA. If you can't enjoy this one, you have no appetite for classic action films. This film shows Harlin IS capable of directing a decent movie. He just needs a solid script and an A list cast. He's been slumming it for the last few years (although he did have Sam Jackson in THE CLEANER, but still, the film was mediocre at best).

reply

The cleaner is infinitely superior to this!

Oh, boo hoo. Go watch Pee Wee Herman again and gnaw on your Fudgesickle.

everyone hates on this film but it was ok when jason bourne did it? I mean really "the bourne identity" had almost the same plot. I liked both films but in some ways for me this one is better.

"he's been licking his a$$hole for the last 3 hours. I submit to you that there's nothing there worth more than an hours attention."

The Bourne Identity is based on a novel published in 1980 -- 16 years before this movie. Shane Black ripped off Bourne. It's more accurate to say this has almost the same plot as the Bourne Identity, which was a much better film on every level. This movie is the juvenile version of Bourne.

reply

"This movie is the juvenile version of Bourne."

Maybe. But this movie is funnier, more entertaining, more action-packed, and more over-the-top. Bourne is cold and existential, Long Kiss is warm and explosive. The added elements of her Charley persona emerging and integrating and having a political/terrorist plot hijack the search for her identity takes it out of Bourne territory. Plus, it has a little something I like to call "Samuel L. Jackson." Oh, phooey, I burned the darned muffins.

I greatly enjoyed the first Bourne movie, and would not disparage it, but there is room in my movie heart for both films. Long live The Long Kiss Goodnight.

reply

ok, I never said this movie ripped off bourne, I know full well bourne was a novel first. I just said they have basically the same plot. I see people complaining about plausability so I'm just saying why is it ok to dump on this but not Bourne for the same reasons? I realize that if you like a film you are forgiving and if you don't like it you nitpick. Bourne is a serious film that took itself seriously. although the character does some incredible things it tried and succeeds to stay within the realm of possibility. I very much enjoyed it, in no small part because of the performances of the two main characters. TLKGN is much more over-the-top and never takes itself seriously. Slick direction, witty diaglogue, quotable one-liners, great actions sequences and eager performances all the way around make me like it even more. I don't think calling it the "juvenile" version is accurate but I would call it the "comic book" version. I also realize you meant that in a condescending fasion and not that it is for children.

"everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die"

reply

Yes, despite the cast

and I'm sure it was terribly expensive because of the effects

but I wish they had spent the money on a decent script

This kind of film must appeal to many, many people because they keep making them

reply

Agreed. Action scenes were decent...script was absolutely awful. AWFUL. And Craig Bierko was TERRIBLE as the bad guy. TERRIBLE. I know Genna was with Renny at the time but this is one she should have stayed farrrr away from.

And 6.6 out of 10? Are you f-ing kidding me?

Hollywood...just one step away from reality.

reply

so you didn't like it... boo hoo.. don't watch it then. I like it. Is it the best movie ever made? No...but so what.

lol if this was the worst action movie you saw, you probably don't watch many movies. I watched this in theater back in 1996, and now got the blu ray, gave it a shot again, 15 years, I so forgot about this film and 90's action flicks, I actually liked it. Yes it's very cheesy and over the top but, very entertaining film.

It's not right to compare this to Bourne, they are similar stories but Bourne came almost 10 years after this one, when the whole action genre basically evolved. Any popcorn action movie made in the 90's was very over the top compared to the ones we are getting today.

And beside that, I don't see Geena Davis in panties in Bourne. :)

You walked in expecting something more when if you looked at the names attached to the picture behind the camera you should have expected what was on screen.

Shane Black - has always injected humor into his action screenplays. He is a major fan of popcorn saturday afternoon action films. This is exactly what TLKGN is, nothing more nothing less.

Renny Harlin - Director of Die Hard 2, Adventure of Ford Fairlane, Nightmare on Elm Street 4, Cut Throat Island... See a pattern

Now the cast...

Everybody loved Sam Jackson for his attitude and persona from Pulp Fiction, casting him as Mitch was a perfect fit for this film.

Geena Davis - This was an out of left field choice but it worked. No one would have bought it in a reality based style film like Say The Bourne Identity, but take an over the top script and top it off with someone you would never expect in this type of film, and show her S&M side and boom you have a classic.

I love the arm chair critics who think they know film from top to bottom, but you know jack. This film was very much in the same vein of LW as it was DH... seriously, if you expect anything more than what you got then you yourself are the only one who should be disappointed for being a dumba$$.

The movie doesn't suck, you just don't know how to enjoy popcorn action films, because you wouldn't know a popcorn action flick if it slapped you upside the head with 9" of limp dick.

Exactly. This movie is totally ridiculous but I loved every minute of it. Popcorn action at its finest.

Some of u may not know, the only reason Geena was cast in this movie is because she was married to Reny Harlin at the time. He thought she'd make a good teacher/assassin.<3

To me its a classic. Seen it hundreds of time and it has great replay value.
Best lines here is by Jackson "That´s not a dick, thats a duck"
And Davis could do a great role as a hot chick...

reply

i think all the things you think but the exact opposite. i dont really know what she did that was impossible... i mean ya youre going to get your impossible *beep* in action movies but its not like this one was that much more of a stretch. she was bad ass and so was the movie as a whole. the part where she said die screaming mother *beep* well there was a line before that, maybe you missed it, but she said it for a reason.

reply

Earlier in the film, when he was about to do something nasty to her, she'd promised him that she'd see to it that he'd die screaming!
