Question about the movie.

What was the character of Bunny played by Francis McDomitt? She was the one who was a big football fan. Chris Cooper went to her house to collect some old things of Buddy's. Was she Cooper's ex wife or what? I didn't quite get what relation she had to all the other characters.

Man what a great movie. The first time I saw it about 8 years ago, I got half way through and returned it, then another two years later I rented it and watched the whole thing and thought it was pretty good. Now I just rented it again and thought it was absolutely amazing. It just goes to show how somethimes your tastes need to grow over the years. I've seen plenty of movies over the years and they helped my palate develop so I can enjoy movies like this. This movie is so subtle that it takes a few viewings to really appreciate everything. Kind of like Citizen Kane.

Bunny was Sam Deeds ex-wife. Watch the scene with Bunny again, it is full of visual cues about her character and she explains who she is in her own roundabout way.

She was Sam Deed's (Cooper) ex-wife. He worked for her father while they were married. Quit that job when he divorced her, and went back to his hometown in Texas to become sheriff.

I read an interview with Chris Cooper where he talked about how he had only that one scene with Frances McDormand as his ex-wife, and John Sayles provided them with pages and pages he had written about their back-story: how they met, what their courtship and marriage was like, what her father was like, what it was like working for him, etc.

I think the scene is there to show that Sam made some pretty inappropriate choices when he could not be with the woman he truly loved, Pilar.
