Now I'm all Confused

This movie is played on our local PBS station quite a bit. Now I was certain it was a movie I had seen PBS quite some time ago. But watching it again recently it is patently obvious that I had never seen this movie before. So the question is exactly what movie am I thinking of? Can anyone help.
1) It was a post-western.
2) I was thinking Tom Berenger was the main star (which I often confuse with Chris Cooper) but his filmography doesn't include any recent post-westerns.
3) It involved the investigation of a sheriff but I believe he was still alive and the current sitting sheriff.
4) Like Lone Star the story was told through the eyes of several characters. We're talking a very large ensemble cast.
5) Race relations was a very strong theme.
6) Now the biggest difference from Lone Star I can remember is the look of the film. I remember the film looking "sunnier". Lots of oranges and yellows. Almost like every single scene was filmed at either dawn or dusk. And it was more stylized with lots of low camera angles and shots through gaps in the scenery.
7) There wasn't anything about the US Army or a night club shooting.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom Berenger has been in "Rustler's Rhapsody," which is a self-aware comedy set within a traditional Western movie. The closest movie he has made to "Lone Star", IMO, is "Betrayed." Berenger's character is a western white supremacist who becomes romantically involved with an FBI agent.

According to IMDB, Tom has also been in these period (19th century) westerns, among others:

"Into the West" (TV movie)
"Peacemakers" ( TV series)
"Johnson County War" (TV miniseries)
"Avenging Angel" (TV movie about Mormon settlement)

Are you possibly thinking of "Flashpoint"? Kris Kristofferson and Treat Williams play Texas Border Patrolmen that find a buried, wrecked Jeep, a high power scoped rifle and a bunch of cash...all of which may or may not be linked to the JFK assasination.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll have to check some of those movies out.

Could it be Silverado?

reply

Silverado does seem to meet many of those characteristics, but it was a real western, not a "post" western. And it had a lot of humor, too.

I realize this is a pretty old post. But I'm curious to know whether, or not you found the answer to your question regarding the Long Star(1996-Chris Cooper) film?

reply

I think he was watching 'Last of the Dogmen'
