Absolutely right - unique, and not for everyone. I found the subject material interesting, and often absorbing, as regards the Okinawa tragedies, layer upon layer. For that history, and the varied perspectives revealed, I stayed with the film.

But the style - primarily the endless and often obscure monologues in closeup - made it a real challenge. The "actress" and the vague, rambling, droning monologues became a turnoff before the midway mark.

There must have been a better way to capture the history and tell the story. I admit to being a fair bit uncultured in modern French cinema ( I prefer mid-century), but I did watch the entire film and did appreciate the underlying message. Still - a five overall.
