What the bloody hell?

I saw this movie a few years ago and thankfully it has pretty much disappeard into oblivion only to be regarded in retrospect as a completely s***e, arse of a movie. This movie could have been alright if only Hollywood would for once in their miserable lives have Irish actors in a film based in Ireland! Americans cannot put on Irish accents FACT and is just embarassing to hear them try.

I admit Jared Leto is pretty pathetic, but come on, it's not as if this movie was devoid of real Irish. Gabriel Byrne, Colm Meaney, and Jason Barry at least are real Irishmen.

i liked it... jared letos accent has a bit *beep* ye, but hes so good to look at :)

I loved this film.I loved Jared Leto as Frankie though his accent did need some work, but it wasn't nearly as bad as some Irish accents attempts I've heard before. Oh and "Hollywood" had for once had Irish actors in a film based in Ireland. All Irish actors. Not this one no, but a little film called Intermission. Just thought I'd let you know that, and Colm Meany was in that film as well.Oh but I thought no Irish actors were in summer fling aka Last of he high kings.what do I know.

reply

Good point, Jackm2002, although Intermission was an Irish film, begorrah!

reply

yep Intermission is a non Hollywood film but it still had Shirley Henderson and Kelly McDonald both Scottish playing lead Irish characters.
I've no complaints though, both are excellent actresses who did a fine job of the accent.

Not being Irish, couldn't fault his accent. Besides too engrossed in the film. Lovely.

Well to Americans they sounded Irish, thats all that matters haha.

reply

While Leto and O'Hara are American actors, the film was a virtual who's who of well known and well respected Irish actors. Not bad, considering the movie was filmed in Nova Scotia and NOT Ireland!

reply

Mirage I know your post was a long time ago but I just have to make sure you know that
1. O'Hara is Canadian not American
2. It was shot in Ireland, I know because I grew up in that town of Howth in Dublin, Ireland and thats it, I can name all the areas seen in the film.

reply

1. O'Hara is an American/Canadian duel citizen of Irish heritage.

2. It was shot in Canada, I know because it says so in the credits.

reply

Oh whine whine whine, you know how many British, Scottish, Irish, Australian, German, and Canadian actors there are in Hollywood now (Cathrine O'Hara being one of them) and do you know how many of them I have listened to while they butcher the American accents? TONS! but who cares. as long as the acting is good who cares if Nichole Kidman can't do a southern accent to save her life. It's so Pig headed of people to think that their accents can only be done by people born a raised there and no one else should even try. So with that out look we are all pigeon holed into playing only characters with our accents BORING!!!! I'm not a huge fan of this movie but I get so sick of people getting so worried about bad accents, now if the acting sucked to that would be another issue. The accent hardly matters as long as you tell the story of your character well. you know most accents won't be perfect because you are trying to also be understood by a MASS audience that may not be able to hear you if you speak in a true Irish accent. I took a year of dialect training and it is a fact that you learn a stage version of the language so you can be heard by a larger variety people. So though sometimes an accent may make you cringe set it aside and look at the whole picture

reply

Finally saw the movie! But I have to admit that Jared Leto's accent was cringe worthy. What was he trying to do?

reply

I didn't think his accent was so bad. Maybe not authentic, but it at least seemed consistent.

And anyway, I think it's garbage when people talk about Hollywood this, Hollywood that on any old movie. This really isn't a Hollywood movie. It's made by an Irish director and funded by Irish production companies. According to the IMDB trivia, David Keating settled on Leto after doing an extensive search across several continents. While we may not all agree on his accent, perhaps that wasn't the primary factor in his being chosen for the role. Maybe he was just the person that fit Keating's vision the best. He certainly wasn't a box office draw or anything at the time, so I can't imagine that there would have been much studio pressure to make that choice. I can understand that you might want to see your own people portrayed accurately, but that isn't always the greatest priority. The better question is whether he fits the movie. I think he does.
