it deals more with its consequences, not that much about the prague spring itself. if youre looking for prague spring movie, pelisky is definitely the best pick.

It does relate to "Prague Spring", but not directly. "Prague Spring" refers to the period before the Soviet invasion in August 1968, when the government -still Communist - started to open up and the old Stalinist hard-line Communist system began to crack. The Soviet Army invaded Czechoslovakia on August 21, 1968 and put an end to the liberalization. Sort of like what they did with the Republic of Georgia last week... :-\

This movie is set in the 1980s when the hard-line Communist system was retrenching itself. The Coomunists called that period "Normalization". Academics, artists, influential busines people, doctors, lawyers were being kicked out of their jobs if they did not have the right political profile (= Communist Party kissasses). That's is why Sverak's charactr is playing the cello in a funeral home instead in the Philharmonic. The movie ends in 1989 when Communism fell, with the scene of Sverak sitting down in the Cello section of the orchestra, from which he had been kicked out.
