Wasn't the name of the film 'Kolja'?

From what I remember, it was. I mean not 'Kolya.' Does anyone happen to remember?

Same sound, different language.

"Kolja" is a Czech transcription of that Russian name and also it is an original title of the movie.
"Kolya" is an English transcription of that Russian name and also it is an international title of the movie.

reply

Um, yeah. To put it more simply, a Czech "j" is said a lot like an English "y", it sounds like the "y" in "you".

Guys, you don't have to explain those subtleties... Thanks, GreyDadel, but let me understand fully: did they rewrite the credits for international release? It matters to the IMDB. (At least I'm sure Russian TV has aired the film with the credits in Czech.)

reply

Yes, they had to write like that so as people in other countries could understand. Look, this name "Kolja " is pronounced in Czech the same way like in English "Kolya" is pronounced. Maybe it´s little bit confusing... You know, some people could pronounce Kolja the same way like... e.g. "Elijah" - there is also written "j" but is pronounced differently
Well, simply - Czech "j" is in English pronounced same way like "y" e.g. "yeah" :-))
but you know this :-)
