Tartan DVD vs. MGM DVD, and running time

I don't currently own either DVD version (I have only seen this movie once, on Sundance channel), and I wanted to know if the Tartan DVD supposedly has more footage than the MGM DVD.

Also, I was wondering if anyone knows why there is now an alternate 88 minute running time listed on the main page for this movie -- I have never heard of this before, always either 78 or 79 minutes.

A detailed comparison of both discs can be found at http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDReviews28/kissed.htm

However, it looks like the site may be inaccurate in some of its findings. There's no mention of the Stopkewich commentary on the MGM disc, and the back of the Tartan sleeve (http://www.woolworths.co.uk//product_images/13/34/43/13344317.jpg) says the film is in 1:85:1 anamorphic widescreen, which would contrast with the screencaps in the link. Bizarre.

I don't own the discs either, but I would imagine the Tartan disc is the uncut version. The running time on that site seems to correspond with the BBFC listing for the uncut video.

Thanks for the info. With regard to the 88 minute alternate running time, I'm now guessing that this might have been for only one showing (perhaps the premiere), and then the film was cut for all subsequent showings.

Or it could be a typo?

I was looking today and found at least one place which also lists 88 minutes; it's a 1997 review from the San Francisco Chronicle.

I just got the film on video; its the first time I saw it since its 1990's premiere, and it has been edited. A nude scene is missing. That could account for the time difference.

I do own the MGM DVD and there is no Stopkewich commentary I can find. If there is one it must be an easter egg.

I respect the right to free speech, particularly when it exposes ignorance!

I just bought the American MGM DVD, and it appears to be the full, uncut version- same as the uncut Canadian VHS which I previously had. The footage cut from the American VHS release- the full-frontal nude shots of Molly Parker in the central necrophilia scene- are intact on the disc.

It says on the back of the box that it is the R version, but the film itself clearly seems to be the uncut version.

So many people on here say that U.S. DVD is cut that I avoided buying it, but eventually gave in, for the sake of having a higher-quality, widescreen version of the film. Are these people just wrong, and haven't actually checked out the DVD themselves? Or were there multiple printings of The MGM DVD, some with the footage put back in, some without it (like what happened with Swamp Thing, when they at first released the uncut version by mistake)?

Assuming they're wrong, and what I have is indeed the only version of the MGM DVD, then more people should buy it; especially considering that it's the only widescreen release of the film available. Much better than the Tartan disc, or the way overpriced Canadian disc.

I have the Summit (Chinese) version DVD and it is 77 minutes long. However, it has the nude scenes, but blurs out frontal nudity, yet it is 77 minutes. I'm wondering what scenes are missing. I saw this movie originally on Showtime and it seemed similar to this version except that the frontal nudity was not blured out.

I was looking at the MGM DVD American versions on Amazon and they all say 78 minutes. I'm wondering if somebody actually has a version that says 88 minutes on it? Or ordered it from Amazon saying its 78 minutes and got the 88 minute version delivered anyway? I have been resisting ordering it because even ebay has MGM DVD versions that say the same thing-78 minutes.

reply

78 minutes is the longest cut available. Either that 88 minute running time is a typo, or else that was an earlier cut that was shown at a festival or two, and then trimmed down by the director. Either way, 78 minues is the current "uncut" version.

LiquidDrainerFilms-
thanks for telling us. The mgm version is a little pricey on the us amazon, its $30 or so which is alot to pay for a censored movie.
Ive never seen the movie before, how will I know if its cut or not.
at what point can I check for this scene?
thanks

Sorry for the really slow reply.

It's the scene where she climbs on top of the corpse on the embalming room table- in the uncut version (which my MGM DVD is), you see her full-frontally nude. In the cut version (on the old Orion VHS tape) the scene is slightly recut so you don't see her pubic hair.
It's really just a few second's difference. Not the biggest deal in the world, but she gives such a powerful and brave performance that it seems really disrespectful to tone down the film's most emotionally intense scene.

Besides, how many people would decide to watch KISSED (knowing what it's about) and be offended by, of all things, a totally non-gratuitous and non-exploitative brief shot of Molly Parker's crotch? That shouldn't be a big deal- it's nothing pornographic or demeaning or negative; just her body, shown in a context that is more emotionally beautiful than actually sexual. The MPAA baffles me sometimes...
