I remember reading somewhere that the original first choice for the part of Ishmael was Chris Farley, but he was busy making another movie at the time. Jim Carrey was the first choice for Ernie but was also unavailable. After Randy Quaid ended up in the role of Ishmael, another actor had not yet been chosen to play Ernie. Randy and Bill had worked together in the past when they were in another comedy called Quick Change together, and Randy suggested that Bill would be good in the role of Ernie.

I just thought that was an interesting piece of trivia, as I cannot imagine Kingpin being nearly as good and lasting the test of time with Jim Carrey and Chris Farley in the parts instead. They are both good comedians, don't get me wrong, but they both have made alot of run of the mill comedies that have disappeared into obscurity with the passage of time. Kingpin is a gem of a comedy, and is perfectly cast, in my opinion.
