real musicians spotted ...

I find that the jam session interweaves the movie really well.
And there are some real cats there ...

I saw:

Ron Carter (+ playing the 'solitude' duo in the end; what a pleasure ...)
James Carter

Belafonte doesn't sing ...

who else have you seen?

reply

Altman used the best of the new wave of Jazz stars of the 90s.
Here's what I could spot.
1st scene:
Mark Whitfield; guitar
Geri Allen; piano
Nicholas Peyton; trumpet
James Carter; tenor sax
Christian McBride; bass
Kevin Mahogany; vocals (as Big Joe Williams singing at the bar)
all of these people were major recording artists at the time of production.
In the later scene, Russell Malone is on guitar and Cyrus Chestnut is on piano
as Count Basie.
The final scene has Ron Carter and Christian McBride on upright basses for Solitude.
The clarinet player is Don Byron.

Don't forget Russell Malone (guitar) and Joshua Redman on tenor saxophone as Lester Young.
