Does anyone know why Indira Varma (Maya in this film), who may have been the most beautiful woman alive at the time this film was made, has had such a relatively indifferent career since -- mostly in TV? She was born in England to a Swiss mother and Indian father and trained at the Royal Academy so it can't be a language problem. It seems to me that under proper management, she should have been a star -- not only gorgeous but a pretty good actress.
It DOES boggle the mind that a gorgeous woman and good actress like her would not be in more films....that was a wasted opportunity by Hollywood and Bollywood too!
I agree with you all. Indira Varma to me was never more hotter than she was in "Karma Sutra, a Tale of Love" She was gorgeous in that movie, I too was dismayed that soon after I had trouble finding her in other features.
But later on she has appeared in some stuff over time, such as the HBO series "Rome" as someone has already mentioned, plus she was in the Gurinda Chadha movie "Bride and Prejudice" with Aishwarya Rai. That was the Bollywood treatment of "Pride and Prejudice" ofcourse. It was a decent movie, it was one of Aishwaraya's hyped movies that I actually did get to see during it's limited engagement in NY a few years back. Indira Varma to me really didn't look that attractive in that movie, and I really thought she was very pretty in "Rome" but as you know her stint in "Rome" was very brief and the series itself only lasted a couple of seasons. Hopefully there may be more worthy features for Ms. Varma in the near future.
PS. It was very interesting to read Indira's critiques of Aishwarya and her acting performances in that movie. All I can say is "OUCH!" real direct to the point stuff!
I agree, Indira was stunning in this movie and I am surprised that she did not go on to have a more successful Hollywood career. Maybe she didn't want one and prefers smaller roles and television.
What IMDB doesn't show is her work in live theatre. She just played Olivia in Twelfth Night with Donmar Warehouse in London's West End. She was excellent and it was a great production.
Judging from her bio in the program, she's been doing a lot of live theatre lately. Good for her.
