Question about the Shah invasion

I love this movie and found it so beautiful and so complex in many ways.

However, I am a bit puzzled by the ending. I know that the Shah were warned to have been coming for sometime to Raj, but due to his arrogance, he dismissed that being any particular trouble to him or to his king-ship.

When they actually *do* invade, what do they do? Do they take down Raj's reign as King? do they kill him?

I recall Biki writing the Shah a letter confirming that King's overindulgence and mistreatment of the common people and his sister (Tara, the queen) and how he agrees to be an ally. Is that an ally in removing Raj from power?

Also, on another note, I watched and anguished when Jai and Maya meet and speak for the last time prior to his death and how she comforts him, etc. I guess I looked at the chains, etc and with him being a sculptor, etc, I'm more than certain he knew of a way that he could have gotten her to help remove him from those shackles and become free. I thought about it while watching the movie.

It was heartbreaking to see him die, particularly only minutes before the Shah apparently comes and changes the status quo upon their invasion.

From what I gathered, the alliance between Biki and the Shah was to overthrow Raj Singh and "liberate" his sister. Raj probably would have been killed (you don't leave your enemies alive to possibly come & kill you later).

Tara may have become another wife of thr new king (Shah), or simply exiled far away with the Old Queen Mother. Tara and Raj had no children, so this wouldn't have been that difficult. The rest of Raj's servants would either be killed or exiled (if they were useless or had too common skills) or incorporated into the new kingdom (if their skills were exceptional).

Just my $.02; I am not as familiar with this period of history.
