Sad ..... Is the book this depressing?

I love this movie. I can't help but watch it every year or so.

I think this is one of the saddest films I've ever seen. Great performances by everyone in the film.

I've heard that there's more to the ending in the book. Is this true? I will have to read the book.

9/10 for me.

Yes, in the book Jude then returned to live with his wife Arabella and died at the end - and these were not shown in the film.

I went to see this movie with a friend when it first came out, and it was absolutely devastating. Great film, but excruciating.

This is one of only 2 films I've seen where I had to go have a drink afterwards to chat and process what I'd just seen. (The other was "Last Exit to Brooklyn.")

That's exactly how I felt after seeing it for the first time. I haven't seen Last Exit to Brooklyn. I want to see it though.

It's a superb book, but cheerful it certainly isn't.
