Eurgh!!

I cannot believe they should such a graphic shot of her giving birth. It was vile, I know its the most natural thing in the world and everything, but I was not expecting to see it like that in a film!

reply

I thought that it was very tastefully done - graphic yes - but childbirth is graphic so I thought that it fit well.

reply

True, I think many of us are too sheltered from things such as birth and where our food comes from, a thme within the film, of the culling of animals. Also I believe that the graphic scene is neccesary above being avant-garde for such a mainstream actress as it reinforces Thomas Hardy's cold, graphic and raw emotion within his novel, telling things as they are.

Beyond this I do not think the birth was vile, it could also be an after-birth, where the blood rich placenta is expelled, which surprisingl few peopleknow about. So its not neccesarily something bad or that somethings gone wrong. Alo isn't it so boring alwys seeying the same shot of people giving irth always above the genetalia but it is refreshing to see birth as it is a different angle to see her vagina and how irth truly was and still is.

it was absolutley an essential scene - as it was shown from the point of view of the deeply troubled little boy.

I kinda agree with the origional poster - reminded me way to much of the videos they keep showing us in biology. I think its their way of trying to put a stop to under-age sex...

reply

It made a change from the birth scenes I've seen in which the ladies giving birth have their gowns down to their knees, tastefully obscuring any lady parts. I've never given birth, but come on.

In general, though, I find birth scenes a bit embarrassing.

Of course they've brought forth juniper berries, they're juniper bushes!

I watch it knowing it is makeup, acting, and the viewer's imagination filling in the gaps.

I don't know why any to-be-father would want to witness a human birth. It isn't a "miracle" - it's hard work and gorey and how can he ever think of his wife's vagina as sexy after that - he would just see it as functional. When I have babies, my husband will NOT be in the delivery room. There are just SOME THINGS others, even our husbands, shouldn't see.

If a man can't handle watching his wife give birth, he has no business being a husband or father, as far as I am concerned. Women give birth. It's not pretty, but it's a part of life. I would say the overwhelming majority of men still desire and love their wives after seeing them give birth. They're just not all that freaked out by a normal, natural function. Sure, it's not pretty, but so what? How sexy do you look when you have the flu? If you can't handle your husband seeing you give birth, how will you handle him seeing you age?

I agree. I don't think it was a shot for the audience to see Sue giving birth, it was a shot to see the boy's reaction to it. I thought it was an interesting idea. I was almsot shocked at first when Jude pushed little Jude up to see what was happening but I believe it played a big part in the story of little Jude. I can't find the right words to put it down on paper, but it did make sense and I think it was necessary. Besides, it only lasts for about 3 and a half seconds.

Hear, hear.

I watched my wife give birth and it made me love a desire her more.

The fact she went through that, to present me with by far the most beautiful thing I've ever held in my hands, made me look upon her as something of a goddess.

And, here's a news flash little girl, vaginas aren't all that anyway if one was to study them - as one poster said 'parts don't make love, people do'.

???????
You're probably shaved up like little girl.
Body parts don't make love - PEOPLE DO.

The birth scene didnt trouble me as much as the son murdering his brothers and sisters and then killing himself. I found that more unsettling. Hell i'd watch the birth over that any day

I was literally reading this thinking that I was WAAAAYYY more shocked and disturbed by the kids' death. Why is it that we are completely de-sensitized to death scenes in movies, but birth scenes are completely unheard of and even seen as "gross?" 3 kids lying (or hanging as it were) is far more "gross" or just plain hard to watch then Kate Winslett simulating a birth. Come, put your priorities straight!!!

reply

It was mainly the shock that made the birth scene so bad.

reply

births are always hard to watch like that but the dead children good god that disturbed me so much. i was depressed for awhile afterwards. Why aren't there more threads about THAT instead of a faked birth?

reply

I believe that seeing Sue giving birth had to be very traumatic for the little boy. I can't imagine a parent keeping a child in the room where a woman is giving birth (especially the mother, although Sue wasn't his real mother)...With all that blood and screaming, a little child would only see this as something terrifying and very negative.

As for big Jude being there, I feel this is totally natural and can be a beautiful experience for a couple... Although some men may not be able to handle seeing a birth..And that's okay, they are still wonderful people and great "husbands" or partners...Everybody isn't meant to deal with that type of thing and shouldn't be expected to.....

I believe the birth was effective to have in the movie and was there partly as a study as to how it could desensitize a little child. Especially if they are already disturbed. The scene where big Jude pulls little Jude into the birthing room and stands there with his hands on little Jude's shoulders, with little Jude's body filling the entire movie frame, was very ominous. I could sense the powerlessness and confusion that little Jude was feeling. Then... adding this to how society encourages boys to bottle up their emotions, it gets even worse. And who knows what he was subjected to by his grandparents who probably resented his birth....Possibly the book would be enlightening about this....
