some quality, but too much bad taste

This is a film with good actors, and that's why I watch it from the beginning to the end.

Unfortunatly there is too much bad taste, no respect for animals and an exploitive expose of women. The sex/birth scenes are unnecessary and in my opinion Kate Winslet shoud had refused to do it.

The murder/suicide was of poor taste and obvious as emotional exploitation. Even the parents reaction to that drama is not realistic. In my opinion, people don't react like that. There would at least be, sooner or later, a reference to the mothers words that put motion to that drama. If not by the father, throw the mothers guilt.

I watched this in the theater when it came out, since I liked the novel.
I really liked the movie, but I thought some scenes were a little too explicit and graphic, the pig slaughter scene was in the novel though. Well, that's Michael Winterbottom, you know. I was kinda disturbed by Sue's birth scene. I've read Kate Winslet's interview, and I was surprised she was totally up for it.

They kept the translation in line with the book, to remove those key scenes would miss the point of the novel. Thomas Hardy, the author, wasn't exactly a "happy" author. The scenes are shocking, but they are necessary. Jude the Obscure IS a tragedy.

The book is bleak and so is the movie!

Its that man again!!

I agree, that birth scene was completely unnecessary.

I'm no prude, either.
