Drab and depressing!!!

The acting was top notch-Kate Winslett is a marvel to watch-I could watch her in anything. Some of the scenes were just disgusting-the birth scene and gutting the pig-do we need to see these things-we know they happen but do we need to see them?

I don't think the sun was up once in this movie and the movie just dragged along. The childrens deaths were rather shocking but you could tell they were wooden dummies which took the dramatic effect away.

5 out of 10.

One of the most depressing films I've ever had the displeasure of viewing.

Kate Winslet seems to have a knack for depressing movies... Like Jude, Revolutionary Road didn't exactly warm the cockles of my heart.

Welcome to the world of Thomas Hardy!

Dammit, Darcy, ya beat me to it.
Thomas Hardy is notorious that almost all of his major novels have absolute downers of an ending? Remember Polanski's "Tess"? That did not exactly have a feel good ending.....
In fact of all Hardy's major novles only Far From The Madding Crowd has a less then tragic ending, and even that is not all that cheerful.

Did you even read the synopsis of the film?
It doesn't describe a happy tale :)

That was the point. A contrast between life and death. After all, the two exist simultaneously. Flawed film, but more due to its pacing which feels excessively rushed and equally fractured.
