Disappointed

I watched this movie today remembering all of the hype it caused back in its day. Boy was I disappointed. Not only did Renee and Tom's character have horrible chemistry, but I felt nothing but pity for Dorothy and Ray and nothing but disgust for Jerry. How can anyone root for this couple when it's so obviously going to fail? A multi-millionaire sports agent will not fall for a single mother accountant (living with her sister.... wait... AND MOVES IN TO SAID SISTERS HOUSE INSTEAD OF HIS NICE CONDO).

He obviously felt that Dorothy was being loyal to him so he felt obligated to be loyal back. He didn't do anything for Tidwell, Tidwell simply got lucky.

So really, what was his accomplishments? Absolutely nothing. Breaking a poor girls heart? Taking credit for his only client's success?

Ugh. I'm disgusted I wasted my time with this. Tom's character was really, truly pathetic, dishonest and hey, even his ex girlfriends said it... he simply couldn't be alone. He held on to Tidwell and Dorothy with everything he had. They meant nothing to him!

Everyone keeps hyping on how cute the scene was when Ray kissed Jerry. Know what I saw in that scene? How Jerry pulled away from his kisses.

I don't think that's cute.

*sticks tongue out*

I don't post.

I am in total agreement-have tried to watch it twice but have to bail when Cuba makes an appearance. Also tempted tp leave when that kid is introduced too.

Cuba made a real fool out of himself in this film.

reply

Yeah, he made such a fool out of himself he won an Oscar for his performance...gosh what an idiot Cuba was...

That is why Gooding won the Oscar: it was a memorable (dynamic) role and performance.

I agree the romance was bad, but that was part of the point -- they both married for the wrong reasons. And they realized it and separated, and later realized there was really something there.

Don't know how you say the characters don't change. Cuba had a hard time listening to Jerry tell him that in his marriage he is all heart, but not his game -- but he took it to heart (no pun intended) and changed. Jerry changed: at the beginning remember the video of all his exes saying how he can't be alone. He went from a person like that, to one who was able to CHOOSE to commit to a relationship because he knew he loved that woman. Dorothy went from a hanger-on to a woman strong enough to separate from her husband, and later went back with him out of strength rather than having to have someone.

I agree completely. I always hated this movie. I was 16 when this piece of crap came out and my mom and I went to see it in the theatre. We almost WALKED OUT it was that bad. And I have never done that before. We didn't walk out but it came close. This movie was the worst of all time, especially considering the hype it got. It sucked.

If you were old enough to remember the history behind his winning an Oscar you would know that Gooding did not deserve this.

Black "leaders" the year prior griped and moaned like spoiled little babies (like Al Sharpton in 2015) that there were no (deservedly so in that particular year) Oscar nominations for blacks. The Academy went out and found the first black actor to turn in a performance in a high profile movie and there was never any doubt Cuba Gooding would win this award.

He is the least deserving, worst actor ever to win an award.

He did make a fool out of himself. It was an embarrassment to see a good actor like him run around being a buffoon like Martin Lawerence. Awards are largely based on big studio advertising and studio promotions. This whole thing was a Hollywood crapfest.

Guys, c'mon???? T.O, Chad Ochocinco, Keyshawn Johnson???? Cuba played it BRILIANTLY. Do you NOT watch football today?

reply

i've just watched it again today - i still think it's a wonderful film :)

Ok, I don't know what's going on here. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but this film is so incredible I honestly can't fathom why anyone wouldn't like it.

He fell for her because he had an epiphany that maybe there was more to life than just money. After he was fired he was broke and everything was put into perspective. Really it's not about a millionaire falling for a poor accountant. It's two lost souls finding each other among the mess of their respective lives. Cheesy, I know, but that was how I saw it. The fact that he moves into her place instead of his "nice condo" just shows how much he's changed and ready to commit. They could stay at his condo. But he no longer wants to. He prefers to stay with her, play with her kid, talk with her sister. He wants to stay in her house because it makes him feel like the person he wants to be. Jerry pulled away from Ray's kisses because he was afraid of getting too attached. But in the end you can see it no longer matters because he ends up loving him as much as if he were his own kid.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Tidwell simply got lucky", but the hug at the end after the game says it all. They had been through everything together - Rod helping him with his life, him helping Rod with his career.

He held on to Rod and Dorothy because he knew they were his only shots at creating a change in his life. So in the end his accomplishment was redemption. He redeemed his life and himself.

Screen Queen , I agree with you.

Jerry Maguire is great film.I think the script is brilliantly different. I got the special edition DVD for my 16th birthday a few years ago and after watching it with commentary I have so much more appreciation for the film

I loved the movie. I felt touched but it was probably because I did not care about the romance part. I hardly care any romantic movies or moments in the movie if it is not sad. In fact, there were some movies that their love scenes were extremely corny but I actually get more resonance with them. If the actors are trying to act as it is realistic, I am actually not caring for it that much.

I watch the movie to be entertained, not rewatch real life all over again. Well, this particular movie, I really don't care about the romance part honestly and there were nothing really memorible between the main actors anyway.

I watched the movie more than couple times and will probably watch it again because I want to watch the story about sports agent and I found that profession intersting. I know the director tries too hard sometimes but I actually don't mind it but I realise it is a movie and it suppose to be 'not real'.

this is an amazing film that touches on a lot of great little nuisances from career importance, family, goals and the effort you put into something

Cruise and Renee don't have perfect chemistry, that's sort of the point...

Tom's character never gave up that much we can say. the film isn't trying to glorify that character though, not even close. but he does change as the story progresses, at least a little bit

'I don't think that's cute'

if you're saying that with a serious face then you totally missed the point of that scene and a lot of the film itself

If i go crazy will you still call me Superman?
