Movies that remind you of James And The Giant Peach

For me personally, I think Phantom Tollbooth, Rock-A-Doodle, The Pagemaster, and Arthur And The Invisibles. I just say them because of the main characters start out in live-action and go into an adventure in animation.

What about you?

Oooh, the Pagemaster, I forgot about that one...

In terms of sheer creepiness of the style, I'd go with Burton films like Nightmare Before Christmas (which Selick directed as well). I love Burton's work. I wish he and Selick would work together more often.

The existentialists would approve.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Cool World for me... also Monkeybone. But, James and The Giant Peach beats ANYTHING out of the water. So overly bright that it has to come off as dark, kinda like Pee-Wees Big Adventure. I love it.

Harry Potter.

A boy's Parents are killed, and he's forced to live with his abusive aunts (in HP's case, and uncle).

further similarities, in both movies versions of these books, the abusiveness is toned down.

Congratulations, George; Star Wars is now one of the greatest comedies in history.

1967 musical, Oliver! reminds me of this for some reason. But, I like this more.

"Tom and Jerry: The Movie"
That film also featured an orphan abused by a guardian. In both films, the orphan also sang a song while drawing a picture.

Since that film was made before "James and the Giant Peach", I wonder if the latter was inspired from the former.
