Science Fiction?

I don't think the title question ever got completely resolved. Did the water actually cause the changes, and how did some people avoid it?

I realize the the painter had an alcohol problem, and therefore was restricted to drinking water--so was that what turned him gay? 'Cause I'm going to stick to Coors if that is the case.

I think that Bruce is the gayest of all the characters, and he was old, so I guess the water had a cumulative effect on him. Maybe everyone will be gay when they are quite old. Better stock up on Vaseline. My hands will be chapped by then.

Did anyone notice how the gay characters' lines were accompanied by mood music and professional camera angles, etc. when they were onscreen? As compared to the sing-songy "John Waters" dialog given to the bigots. Gay folks were portrayed as three-dimensional, and the jerks were cartoonish! I think straight people should march. No one will want to be straight after seeing how badly they were depicted in this film.

If anyone know what the ingredient in the water is that turns people gay? Can you buy it like Kool-Aid? I would like to send a complimentary bottle to Tom Cruise. As if he hasn't had enough!

In the bar scene near the end, we learn "there was nothing in the water."

I don't think the film was meant to be so even-handed that we provide a three dimensional picture of all the characters (is it usual for movies to go out of their way to give fully balanced accounts of 'bad' guys?), but in the commentary (see DVD) we learn some complained about how some of the gay characters were stereotypical as well. This makes sense in a satire. Various straight characters were shown as benign.

The lighting etc. highlighted key moments of the main characters, so that too doesn't prove anything as to bias. Bruce does defend the mother, one of the most bigoted characters (on this issue at least) characters in the movie, and thus we learn she really isn't THAT bad really.

The water theme was both an inside joke and meant to be part of the satire. But, I'm not sure if the commens here totally get the point, or wants to.

No, it's all true. And beer is made with water, genius. You are getting gayer by the second and pretty soon you will start to wear pantyhose.
