Hope someone can help me. I'm trying to think of the name of a film that has a similar plot. It took place in the 1950's Midwest, involved 2 guys, and the breaking and entering of several houses and the murder of the families. I recall the the governor called out the National Guard to patrol the streets. Thanks for any help.

You may be thinking of the Caril Fugate/Carl Starkweather case. It was a guy and a girl and they killed about ten people. There were several movies made about this; one of the most prominent was entitled "Badlands" and starred Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen.

There was also a film called Starkweather with Tim Roth and Randy Quaid.
