To those of you who have (especially) seen it and also know/heard such phrase, what does "idiot box" mean, is that meant to be like a slang term for "mainstream TV" and its called that way because nothing intelligent on it is shown and also loads of manipulative, unobjective propaganda?
And such terms were already available by and in 1996, even in Australia?

Yes . Theres a board game of the same name from the 80s i just found out when looking for the DVD of this film.
Mainstream tv was all there was back then .
These days we have managed to make it more moronic with certain flavours of reality tv.
It means all of tv. The term goes back to television's infancy, when a lot of people thought is would make you stupider just off principle. I'm not sure I entirely disagree.
