This is way underappreciated

Over 2 hours of Walter Matthau and Ossie Davis in top form is pure comedy gold. So how come it only has 6.3? It deserves more, if only for Matthau and Davis.

Im praying for rain in california so the grapes can grow and they can make more wine.

How come? In small part because most of the kiddies on the boards haven't arrived at the stage where they even want to contemplate growing older, let alone know what it's like. In small part because they'd rather laugh at old people than with them.

Matthau is intensely charming and some of his delivery in INR is inspired. But at times he could have benefitted from a little reining in. The film is also more tedious than it has to be, and worse, some of the plot points are absurd, such as the confrontation with the professional mugger under the bridge. None of the scenes involving the art student and the drug dealer work, imo. It would have been better to leave the two old-timers on the bench.

For the writing and the rapport between Matthau and Davis, however, it's worth a 7-7.5 at least.

Saw in middle of night by accident. Agree, how come I never heard of this movie and it should have at least an 8 maybe more. Matthau is a master.

Your quite right. I was raised by many older people and society doesn't respect them. I was taken by walter's remark about his daughter's ajustment.
"Now everyone plays with you." God help us a reminder of the price we all pay to fit in.

It's only a shame Matthau and Davis didn't do more films together, because their chemistry is gold, especially the park scenes.

IMDb ratings suck, IMO.

Perry: "You, stop multiplying!"

Because there's not a whole lot of comedy. You think 80 yr old men being beaten up by thugs is funny? Ossie Davis' character losing his job and home is funny? Matthau's character losing his freedom because of his crabby daughter is funny? A fake junkie (didn't buy she was an addict) getting slapped around is funny? Sad stories of their past lost loves is funny? Much of the dialogue is tedious. Tedious is not funny. Not much of a plot either. I love Matthau but this film could have been so much better.

The people you idolize wouldn't like you.

I saw the play, with Judd Hirsch and Ben Vereen. It's a little tighter as a play. Movies translations always feel they have to switch the action around from one area to another, which is sometimes superfluous when the whole thing was originally conceived as a single set.

But I have to say that Matthau and Davis are superlative in the roles. And an appearance by Craig T. Nelson is always good.

the translated title i know this by is playing quite a bit on the "grumpy old men" title, and come to think of it ossie davis even has a small part in "grumpy old men" as well, as chuck with the baitshop, anyway i've only seen this when its aired on tv and haven't found it near as fun sharp or enjoyable.
