Stephen Dorff as Candy Darling?!?!

Uh... here's the thing, kiddies... Candy Darling was not only passable but beautiful.

Mr. Dorff is a decent lookin' fella... but he's no Candy Darling.

This is nearly as offensive as when Candy Darling lost the part of Myra Breckenridge to Raquel Welch.

Ms. Welch is a wonderfully beautiful woman... but she's no Candy Darling.

In alot of ways you are right KK 666...but to be honest, I think Dorff did a great job. Otherwise, the only others to play Candy Darling would have been an actual woman. I have alot of the old Warhol cult films...and Candy (beautiful as she was) did have some masculine mannerisms...or at least I thought so. But, this is IMO. In THAT day and age...I would have known she was a man at one time. Now, Im not so sure. Just my 2 cents

"oooooh....someone needs a RAID enema to kill that bug up their ass!"

Would you have minded if a woman were to play Candy? I thought that might have been a fitting tribute. :)

reply

I wouldnt have minded at all. In fact, Im sure the real Candy Darling would have been flattered to have a real woman play her. It would have been a fitting tribute. BTW, who would you have picked to play her if you had a choice? No one seems to come to mind for me.

I think Gwen Stefani looks quite a bit like Candy Darling did . . . as it is Candy in this movie prtrayed by Stephen Dorf comes off as a Bruce McCulloch character . . . one breathy whisper away from Kathy with a "K".

I met Candy Darling several times. I remember the sadness I felt when she died. I photographed Jackie Curtis sitting on Cecil B. DeMille's stuffed dogs (Warhol's possessions) at the Factory on Union Square. I had Holly Woodlawn visit my apartment in the company of other Warhol sometimes-"employees" such as Sylva Thinn (who wrote for Warhol's Interview magazine, and was also a good friend of mine). I still have my original snapshots, plus some larger prints, of the photos I took of most of these people.

The portrayal of Candy in this film was cartoonish, to say the least. She was more female than she was portrayed here. Curtis' characterization is tepid at best. The actor who played Warhol did a remarkably good "imitation" of Andy, but I can't say he was a good actor....

I only met Warhol a few times when I visited the Factory. I found him shy, unasuming and absolutely brilliant.

The first time I met Warhol (Sylva introduced me to him), he had Polaroid photos spread out on his desk. He reached out to shake my hand and accidentally knocked over a cup of coffee, spilling it's contents on several of his photos. I was paralyzed with shock. He looked down at his desk and, after a few very long seconds, said only, "Oh, my."

On that same day I photographed his collection of pottery "pig" cookie jars.

One last point-- Max's Kansas City was NOT all it's cracked up to be... Most nights it was a real drag, and to get me there I sometimes had to be "dragged" by my roommate, who loved the joint.

I was more the "waterfront & Jane Street trucks" type....

.....any of you who were around there back then will know what I mean.

I just saw a tranny who looked a lot like Candy Darling on HBO's Hooker Series Hookers of Honolulu. 'Her' name was Barbie-Q. Definitely a modern day version!

Cousin Cheryl, I don't think the family REALLY knows you.

Your sooo lucky. I would have loved to hang around that scene...even for a little bit.

Yeah Bruce McCulloch was the first person I thought of too when I saw Candy.

Yeah, I got the Kathy with a "K" vibe. But you know...Bruce does make a pretty woman. Almost as good as Dave Foley. I've seen pictures of Candy she had an awesome look. If she had been played by a woman I would pick Susan Sarandon. It's the jawline and the eyes.

How would you feel about Madonna as Candy Darling? Personally, I think I would prefer Dorff to her, but you never know.

reply

I thought he would be terrible, but I was pleasantly surprised. Dorff was great as Candy.

"Candy" may have been good-looking as far as male drag queens go, but that doesn't mean he appealed to most men sexually (especially straight ones). I dont know a lot about his private life, but I have a hard time believing that "Candy" was so hot and believable as a woman that he regularly lured straight men to his bed. If I am wrong, feel free to correct me.

I've seen pictures of Candy Darling, and I thought she was beautiful. If I didn't know she was a man, I would have never assumed.

I thought Dorff was a decent looking lady, actually. It surprised me. But the voice was too breathy, like he was trying to sound like a woman. But then again, he isn't really a woman, so breathy was all he had, I guess.

I agree with you, dizzyBallerina. I first saw this movie before I knew who Candy Darling was. I think Stephen Dorff is pretty convincing as a trans lady...but not Candy Darling.

After seeing this for the first time I looked up an interview with the real Candy Darling...and my first thought was "she's more of a woman than I am!" (and I'm a ciswoman, which means my body matches my gender).
I swear, even her voice was feminine! And I'm not talking about a high male voice, I mean her voice sounded like a ciswoman voice! And she was so beautiful...she became one of the people I admire that day :).

The male transgender model Andrej Pejic would have made an ideal Candy, but at the time this movie was made he would have been too young for the role.

His performance didn't do anything for me. At times it seemed more Jackie than Candy.
