Ok Well who liked it?

Am I the only person who actually likes this movie? In fact I LOVE IT. I mean Daisy an her grandmother have a close relationship(mabye a little too close but still) and recounts her day and I thought the guy is NOT a jerk untill the end so it wasnt predictable. It was really interesting the concentration camp parts too. Does anybody else like it?

I loved it too. It's really a good movie especially if you watch at in a noon time when you don't have anything to do.

I LOVED it! I just finished watching it and cried. I cannot believe what happened at the end. It is definately not the typical romantic movie--I thought they would end up together. But I suppose it is more realistic and less hollywood--which is kind of a nice change but so sad! I thought the acting was fantastic.

Oh c'mon, geli, the ending was *awful* - it seemed like they didn't know where to go with the plot so decided on that ludricrous freeze frame at the end. Really quite a bizarre film, although interesting early appearances. I do actually remember Claire Danes promoting this and gushing about getting to work with Jeanne Moreau; pity it turned out such a mess.

my flatmate & i watched this film a couple of weeks ago and we were both left thinking "wtf?!" it had the most random ending and the flashback thing didn't really work for me. the whole film made me kind of uncomfortable, but at the same time, i couldn't turn it off!!

reply

I know what you mean, I watched it the whole way through even though knew I didn't like it after the first 15 minutes. But then, I am a big Claire Danes fan ;) "WTF?!" really sums this movie up.

i enjoyed it. not just for the jude law and claire danes factor. i like films that are open and makes one think about "what if". i'll never be able to imagine how traumatic the holocaust was, but i get bits from movies like this. it's all part of our ugly world history but one that we learn from. this movie was very inviting to me. i'm glad i watched it. i made the connection with the "daisy" character. a child whose parents are too busy for her and the lack of bonding.

liked it. granted that freeze frame at the end was a bit sudden, the movie had a nice rhythm, the scenery and shots were nice, story interesting and the acting (claire danes 17) was great.
but then again i like slow pensive movies..it was quite poetic.

I liked it.. It's really good, but Ethan was an ass in the end. I think he really did like her, but found her too wierd.. But I think he liked the kinda sad and wierd in her, until his friends pointed out just how wierd she was. It was pretty obvious that it was like he had to choose between her or his friends and he chose his friends.

I love this movie, I kinda had the same thing happened to me before so watching it has always been really sad and sentimental to me

I, too, think that Ethan liked her very much. His respect for her is one reason for his breaking up with her, and yes – also because she was a bit too “intense” for his tastes. Daisy was a deep individual, whose sensitivity was compelling because, to me, it is something I see in people who’ve got such a seeming magnetism in strength they sometimes don’t even realize. She was truly a beautifully spirited person, and her nana was so wonderful in offering every second she could to encourage Daisy to be that survivor Daisy so truly is. On Ethan again, well – he’s a young guy under pressure of peers. Therefore, it’s kinda like a “given” of sorts that he’d be persuaded a bit by his hipster friends, whom he depended on to be his own support group because he seemed, from what I gathered, a little lonely in the crowd. It was probably best for the both of them that he tore their relationship off. Finally, perhaps a little credit can be given to him for doing so, too, considering he had respect enough for her not to mess around; instead, he just broke things off for good.

Anyway, I shed a tear or two throughout, and I especially loved the shared conviction of love between Nana and Daisy. That is very powerful, and often people attempt to rebel against that sort of thing, as if it's shameful -- or should be -- TO BE so close to those you love. For example, the Miley Cyrus issue with her dad in pictures taken not too long ago, wherein some people criticized them for being too close, as if all that was wanted was some story of incest between country folk. Well, whatever their situation is, there's no assumption here because it's respected that a man can adore his daughter so much that others seemingly just don't understand. The fact that he does does not mean anything "extra" necessarily, so it's not strange, at least to me, that Nana and Daisy loved each other so. After all, the straight and non-incestuous guy that I am and all, I had a VERY CLOSE relationship with my Grandmother when I was coming up, may she rest in dear peace.

Thank you.

twilight...

The main story of this film centers around Daisy and her grandmother, not Ethan (despite that the film-makers were inclined to highlight Jude Law in the film's promotion). As such, Ethan's role is to give Daisy something that will broaden her horizons and bring her closer to who she really is. Nana is the one who understands all this and not only gives her guidance, but understanding as well. It is a difficult time for Daisy and there are so many things to learn about herself. Yes, Ethan does like her very much, but I don't think your theory about the break up does justice to the theme the movie is trying to portray. He begins to turn against her when he learns of her grandmother's history, revealing that he has certain anti-semitic characteristics. Though there is some contact after that, it goes downhill. It is only when she realizes and comes to grips with why he broke it off that she is able to move forward with her life, however briefly the film spent on this feature. His suggesting that she is too intense or that her speaking about her grandmother is too depressing or that he returns to his "friends" I think can be described as rationalizations. He is giving himself reasons for the breakup.

As to the movie itself, it was very well done, with outstanding performances by all the leading actors. Claire's performance was particularly good and bodes well for her future as a leading actress.
