I was 7 years old when the movie came out, and yeah I saw in the theaters. I loved the film so much in fact, I used to have a pet turtle I named after Esmeralda.

I wish I had seen it in theaters, though I might have been too young to appreciate it then. (I would have been 8 or 9 at the time...huh...how time flies...)

I think we all had the hots for Esmeralda.

I was also 14... I was a Disney nerd :). There was only a handful of people in the theater, including two little kids who laughed at the obligatory funny parts. I remember overreacting and saying it was "my favorite" Disney animated feature afterward, but less than a year later I realized it's not. I respect it, but it's certainly not one of my favorites.

I remember skipping "Hercules" in the theater next year--it didn't look that good lol.

I did. I was 11 and I loved it.

I loved this film as a kid. I remember seeing it at the theater with my entire family when I was 9.

I saw it twice. The first time I was a little confused and perplexed at the whole Sanctuary stuff and the oppression. The second time I saw it I enjoyed it much much more.

Both times I saw it, the theater was not crowded at all. It was a big auditorium the first time, and the tiniest theater the second time. Did anyone else experience something similar?

I also saw it at 14 and LOVED it. I think I was at the perfect age where I could appreciate the adult themes but still enjoy the kid humor. It was in the middle of Junior High and I had just finished really rough 7th grade year. I could relate to the themes of being an outcast found a lot of comfort in standing up for the marginalized. Plus, I remember students were at the age where they suddenly thought they were too old for Disney and didn't want to see it. It wasn't the same as the previous years when EVERYONE was talking about the latest animated movie. As a lonely fan my appreciation for it grew all the more. I wanted others to recognize how create a film it was. I liked it so much that I decided to actually read Victor Hugo's novel that coming school year in 8th grade. It was probably the most challenging book I had read at the time and completely worth it! I've honestly been celebrating "Topsy Turvy Day" every January 6th since 1997. :)

I was only 3 1/2 when it came out, so I didn't. But tbh, I think that was a good thing because it probably would have scared me and I would have had a negative association with it. Watching it when I was older and could understand the underlying themes and appreciate it was definitely better.

I certainly did! But I remember not liking it after the first time I saw it, neither did my mom. Two weeks later, I started falling in love slowly with Quasi. What a touching boy he is! What a sweetie! He still makes me smile and giggle all over--even 20 years later! Who would we be without Quasi or this ever-so-fun movie? Praise and thanksgiving to all who lent their talents to it--animators, actors, musicians, singers, everybody! Absolutely stunning--bravo! :) <3
