And then we have HUNCHBACK. It's Stephen Schwartz and I and Peter Parnell, directed by Scott Schwartz, Stephen's son. We're developing HUNCHBACK for the stage, and last time we did that, we did it in Berlin 16 years ago or 15 years ago, something like that. It expands on the movie considerably, but the basis of the score is the base of the animated movie.

We did a little table reading. We have these things at Disney -- we call them the Rooftop Players, I think -- and it's in-house. And then we did a reading of HUNCHBACK with actors as well, which was great. It was really moving and successful, so I can't wait to see that come to the stage.

And then I have a couple of new projects I'm doing. Some with teams I've worked with before, and some with new teams, all really exciting projects and high-profile names. But I think I'm going to annoy people if I actually mention the names.

Do u have some songs that weren't in the movie and any cast members yet?

reply

The only ones I know of are Someday (which was in the closing credits http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMs5bxGTvAg) and As Long As Theres a Moon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuhPdyrTWuY)
I would suggest looking up Der Glöckner von Notre Dame

Looks like this is really happening then - there have been several false starts in the past.

I really really hope they didn't do the Disney version. I hope they would follow the book as closely as possible. I mean come on, If Les Miserables (another Hugo) can pull it off, why can't this?

reply

The french already tried that it didn't work. Disney are currently devolving it, so....

I believe this is a NEW one based on the Disney movie. Which while i'm all in favor of new adaptions, i admit i'm not sure sticking to those adaptions are going to make me that excited.

But if you are interested there already was a french opera and a german musical disney put together which while based of this film follows the source better than this did. I think both are fabulous, and honestly i like both more than this Disney film.

I look forward to this and wish it the best, but as far as hunchback performances are concerned the bar is set pretty high. Good luck to all involved.

I'm really hoping to see this.

When the movie came out I thought it truly had what sounded like one of the most Broadway-like scores of all the Disney movies. And it has such a great message too.

If done well, this could be a truly colorful, emotional, and thoroughly entertaining production. And it sure looks like it has the creative team to get the job done. Hoping.

I predict the stage musical will suck
I'm sorry, but I don't trust stage versions of masterpiece films such as this one.

reply

Oh, I don't know. The German version has garnered quite a bit of praise.

It does ring some changes on the Disney movie to be a bit closer to the novel. The gargoyles have different names and are more explicitly products of Quasimodo's imagination (which I think works well and wish they'd done in the movie, instead of having them be actual living beings).

More to the point, in the ending of this one, Esmeralda dies of her injuries and leaves Quasi and Phoebus alive to support each other in their sorrow. It's still a bittersweet ending since Quasi does get the acceptance he needs from the people and the friendship he needs from Phoebus, even if he loses the girl he loves.

I think the BATB and TLK stage shows are just as good as the movie. I saw an out-of-town Aladdin tryout as well as a regional of Little Mermaid and was somewhat underwhelmed. Haven't seen Tarzan but I like the music. The only Disney musical that was better than the movie was Newsies. I didn't pay attention much to the movie whenever I watched it in choir, but the stage show was phenomenal! Can't wait for Hunchback! :)

I am hoping that this comes to Broadway. It would be a-maz-ing. I am all for making it a little darker, too, but keep the songs from the movie. They are going to change Frollo back into an Archdeacon, too, I believe.
