Does the mother abandon them in a mall parking lot?

I am trying to remember if this was a movie I saw ages ago and always wanted to see again. I happened to read 'Dicey's Song' and the events in it struck me as so familiar that I wonder if this is the movie?

At the beginning, does the mother rush them out of bed and tell them to make peanut butter sandwiches and then leave them in a station wagon in a parking lot and simply never come back?
