DVDS of/versions of the film

A DVD release is listed for 7 October 2003, but I can find no trace of it as being released in Canada as well as the States; anyone have any news?

As well, the original movie was shelved by the studio for quite a while before release, and one result was the insertion of a couple of scenes apparently intended to "explain" the plot for people who couldn't follow it (they involve a New Orleans Mafia boss who shows up nowhere else). Any news on whether this will be a director's cut, or just a studio catalogue dump?

I just watched this last night on DVD, so I can tell you about that version at least.

It's a Dutch DVD, put out by IMPH (Int'l Music Pub. House). It's R0 so you can play it anywhere, English only, Dutch titles only, Dolby Digital 2.0, and though it says ca. 132 minutes long, on my machine it ran 128.

A question in case you saw the film in a theatre -- on the DVD it was *full* of bloopers - microphones dangling from above, and the dolly tracks appeared a full half-dozen times.

I wonder if the DVD, obviously a cheap version (although the image is pretty crisp), was just run full-frame from the film, because often films shot full-frame have mikes at the top if they're incorrectly masked in the theatre. But here, it would have been a question of someone improperly setting the transfer mask. I can't believe that the dolly tracks at the bottom of the screen are the result of this, though -- they intrude SO far into the frame it's unbelievable!!

Really annoying, because apart from that it wasn't a half-bad adaptation. But you MUST read the book, which is absolutely brilliant, and 100x better than the film.

Another apparent blooper was Eric Roberts' hair in the last scene - all of a sudden he has his usual wavy locks?????? What happened to the tight braids??? And just in the last scene!!

Be most curious to know if you have info on this

This is not a blooper,he has cornrows(or as you say braids)in the majority of the movie. This is the same hairdo worn mostly by some african Americans.Cornrows may be put in and taked out in a short time, and can be worn by Whites.Eric could have taken them out for bed. Food for thought....

Check them out here.

I just picked this up from the Walmart $5.50 bargain bin in Oklahoma. I haven't watched it yet but I wanted to let you know it's out there.
