Warning! This is absolutely not Spinal Tap!

I can't understand all the criticism I hear about this movie ripping off Rob Reiner's idea for This is Spinal Tap. They're both totally different. I hardly find Hard Core Logo satiric. This is much more darker. Sure, Bruce MacDonald used himself as if he was the one making a documentary. But he did that in Roadkill too. And Eric Idle did that even before Spinal Tap. So in that train of thought, if Hard Core Logo and Roadkill were rip offs of Spinal Tap, so was Trailer Park Boys because they had a crew filming the lives of other people, and Spinal Tap was just a rip off of the Rutles, which was a "ripoff" of Beatlemania.
If anyone still thinks this is anything like Spinal Tap and refuses to watch it for that reason, I urge you to watch it again and look for what it really is. You'll probably notice something more.

This movie is definitely not Spinal Tap. Hard Core Logo has one thing in common with Spinal Tap: Its a movie about a band. HCL isn't a comedy, its a drama mostly. Its dark, ironic, and mostly depressing. So don't believe the quotes: "The punk rock spinal tap" and "hilarious" from the box cover. Both are untrue. This movie doesn't have one moment that can qualify as hilarious. If you like very dark humor and stories about a band spiraling into crap, then you'll like this. Also people who will grab anything that Quentin Tarantino puts his name on will be satisfied too. This is also some of the most generic "punk" rock I've heard, hopefully that was on purpose. Definitely a downer.

Yeah covering The Rocket From the Tombs/The Dead Boys song "Sonic Reducer" is generic... yeah apparently keeponwithbrian knows nothing about punk music. And yeah this story does give an example of the *beep* that unsigned or indie label punk bands have to go through while trying to survive on beer for money, 20 people shows in a van that starts to smell like a locker room after two days and WILL break down... I think the movie was very good... some cheasy attempts at being funny here and there but,,, overall a really good movie. And no its not just a Canadian thing...its true of any DIY punk scene, US, South American, Europe, Japan, its a tough thing to do, but for some its all worth it for the 30 minutes on stage a night.
