John + Mary

Okay, I'm watching the movie right now..and I'm a little confused. You know the "Mary The Fan" part, where she's talking to the band after the show...

Well, when John is talking to her and says stuff about Joe *beep* Billy up the ass, and all that, and then says it's fake. She looks weird..and then he asks her name and she says "Mary." She looks like she's gonna cry..and then leaves.

Did I miss something?

I hope someone can help me with this..thanks.

reply

I thought he said 'fake' too the first couple times. But on closed captioning it says 'vague'. It's anyone's guess how much of what John says is true, since he's off his meds and confused.

As for why Mary reacted the way she did, that's anyone's guess as well. One of the theories I've heard is that she's upset that her kid's dad is a homosexual (since it's heavily implied that little Billie is Billy's child).

reply

yeah I think it's 'vague' not 'fake'.

My interpreation is that Mary used to be a typical groupie was was probably after Billy, but he wasn't interested enough in her, so she ended up having sex with Joe in the back of the van, as he later tells Billy. She's probably upset because her oh so manly rock star heroe apparently had a homosexual experience with one of his bandmates. Years after she had sex with Joe Dick she proudly presents her husband and child to the band as if she was saying, "look, I got a life now", but her reaction upon John telling her about Joe and Billy shows that she still has those dreams of being some rockstar's girlfriend or whatever, which is why she named her daughter after Billy, but that apparent homosexual experience of his simply burst her bubble.

but that's just my guess, maybe I got it all wrong..?

reply

Mary looks upset because she's uncomfortable with John's rambling. He's clearly mentally ill and she is sad since they are old aquaintances.

reply

tweedy is dead on, its pretty obvious at that point that he's lost it and shes welling up cos shes his old friend.

reply

Ya i would have to agree in that respect. I see it as her feeling sorry for all of them. She has turned into your regular day married women with a husband and a kid and they are all her age but still running ramped and doing *beep* up things and chasing a distant dream and I think it hurts her to see her past which she has given up is still what they are after.

reply

I'll second Tweedy's view on that sequence in the movie,
as Mary turns up with husband and child all enthusiastic, hangs out with her beloved band from her youth only to have her (probably exaggerated over time) nice memories broken with the mess that is Hardcore Logo. I mean each of the characters have fallen straight back into old touring habits, getting off their face. Then for the obviously mentally ill and suffering John to pull her aside and ramble on about some imagined incident then to forget her name as she was THE groupie for the band and an old friend is the straw that breaks the camel's back. The bubble bursts, she packs up the kid & her husband (who also isn't too impressed by the band's backstage environment) and promptly leaves looking very saddened by the whole experience.

reply

Exactly. It just took the wind out of her sails and ruined the image she had of her punk heroes.

The thread killer strikes again.

Billy Mary's daughter is Billy talents child that is what is refered to when in the credits Billy's follow up states that Billy was envolved in a cutody battle. So Mary clearly had a bunch of confused feelings and it also might have been a bit to subtle for some of you but in his drunken stumbling when talking to Mary he kept making fumbled attempts to kiss her so add that all up after hearing John's story then she very well had a right to feel awkward.

If you watch the credits (before they roll - just as the key crew members names appear), interspersed between crew are black screens displaying the fate of each character. They are as follows:

Joe Dick

Was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. His body was stolen a year later and has never been recovered.

Billy Tallent

Continues to tour and record with Jenifur. He is presently involved in a child custody battle.

John Oxenberger

Now fronts a country western band based in Austin, Texas. He goes by the name: "The Ox".

Pipefitter

Is currently employed as a grip on Bruce McDonald's film adaptation of "Anna Karenin".
