This is a very successful film biography on "Hamsun" mainly thanks to a phenomenal role of von Sydow. Also the director did his job in not boring to death during the 2.5h screening. It the story of the great writer that praised Hitler without showing a bias and staying very close to the actual events. Highly recommended to those interested in history.

Again, I wish more of Jan Troell movies were available to rent. I watched this one during the Troell retrospective in Wroclaw (Era New Horizons film festival). The only movie available in LoveFilm (a British snail mail rental system like Netflix) is his latest one about Maria Larsson (or at least will be, release date planned for November).

I thought it was fantastic. I will be thinking about it for a long time. In the U.S. it is available to stream for free on Netflix. Von Sydow has long been my favorite actor and every performance is a completely new achievement.
