Goldblum's first black alliance my arse!

This is in reference to the user comment. First off, what a ridiculous detail to focus on. Second, what about Earth Girls Are Easy (1988) with Damon Wayans?

reply

There's also a comment about there never being a white champ. Rocky Marciano, anyone?

Yeah..perfect record...

Unless were strictly talking heavyweights here, there has been quite a few. Jim Braddock would be another heavyweight. Joe Louis won his belt off Braddock.

reply

I take Jim Braddock with a grain of salt. Yes, he was champ, but didn't fight for two years, and when he finally did, he lost. He only held the belt for as long as he did because he didn't fight anyone. But, he was still a champ.

Time wounds all heels.

reply

Ingemar *beep* Stenmark! :D

reply

Try Ingemar Johansson (1959-1960). He was the last white heavyweight champ until Vitali Klitschko in 1999.

Stenmark was a champion skier.

reply

And Deep Cover with Larry Fishburne. And just a footnote, Jeff and Larry played thug/rapists in Death Wish and Death Wish II respectively. Also there was a Rocky Graziano who retired as champion in the 50s.

reply

I don't think they ever even said there was never a white world heavyweight champion in this movie. Remember someone makes reference to Dempsey/Tunney(sorry if my spellings off) being the most profitable fight in history at one point. The joke is that there hasn't been a real white contender in the heavyweight division for years("not counting Butterbean of course").

Republicans dont watch stand up, theyre busy watching cartoons, trying to see who's gay.

reply

The reference is to Holmes vs Cooney, the most profitable fight in history, dempsey/tunney was way back when it was like a quarter to go to the fight. As for their reference to white champions they are refering to the more recent times where the only real white contender since cooney has been Tommy Morrison.

reply

Yeah, Tommy Morrison was one of the fighters getting his face rearranged on one of the videos the sultan and his crew were reviewing for possible contenders.

Aren't all the current Heavyweight champs Eastern Europeans?

nice dig into the "wayback" machine...most of these posters are probably too young to remember "Tenspeed and Brownshoe". Good show.

And I'll add another "Black Alliance" - Goldblum and Will Smith...Independence Day..........anyone heard of it?

Every time I start to talk about boxin', some white man's gotta pull Rocky Marciano out their a/ss. That's their one. That's their one. Rocky Marciano! Rocky Marciano!

reply

Joe Calzaghe, Ingemar Johansson, Gerrie Coetzee, Max Baer, James Braddock, James Jeffries, Max Schmeling, Bob Fitzsimmons, Gene Tunney, Tommy Morrison, Primo Carnera, Kelly Pavlik, George Chuvalo, Jack Dempsey, Ray Mancini, Vitali Klitschko, Wladimir Klitschko, Oleg Maskaev, Ruslan Chagaev, Sultan Ibragimov, and Nicolay Valuev.

reply

okay, aside from jeffries, fitzsimmons, tuney, and dempsey, not a single one of the other fighters you've mentioned could justifiably be considered an all-time great. not to mention you left even greater white fighers like carmen basilio, harry greb, hell, i'll take jerry quarry over half the guys you got mentioned up there. so good try, but no.

reply

Thanks. Being old has to have some value.

reply

I prefer to think of it as being seasoned.

Kostya Tszyu was probably the most scary white guy of modern boxing - the way he murdered other good fighters. But he was a super-lightweight and not a heavyweight.

Either way, I love this conversation. We have this conversation about white, Mexican, Black fighters and so on..at my work all the time. This talk is in it's 21st year at my place of work and we are not even close to settling the debate.

I mention Kostya as the Mexicans and Blacks at my work seem to admit he was a badass in his prime more than any other white guy I bring up.

Also - you gotta give the Klitchkos an honorable mention as they have been killing everyone for like a decade now - boring or not.

Keep this stuff fun...it's the type of stuff that guys of different colors can argue about and relate.

reply

I agree about both Klitchkos.....they had scary power. It would have been interesting to see early Tyson and Klitchko.

Let's go back further than that.

Didn't anyone watch Tenspeed and Brown Shoe?
